Long Island Criminal Law
New and Recent Changes to Criminal Law in Long Island
A new law in New York allows anyone interested the ability to obtain information about a crime including the sentence and release date of an inmate in state prison.
You can simply use your touch-tone phone and place a toll free call to the Department of Correctional Services, the state’s prison system, to retrieve information on a convicted felony offender currently in custody. If the person you are researching only served a short time ago and/or has made bail records may not be available. Additionally, if the individual has not served time in a state facility a listing may not be available.
The system that offers this unique service to New Yorkers is called VINE which stands for Victim Information and Notification Everyday and is available 24/7 in English and Spanish. VINE is part of Governor Pataki’s Jenna’s Law which was enacted by the New York state Legislature in 1998.
In order to access the information you must first acquire the inmate’s New York State identification number or have their date of birth. After dialing 1-888-VINE-4NY you key in the identification number or their complete name and date of birth and you will get the latest information.
As a resident Long Island, it is important that you keep up to date on what’s going on in the legal system, for your protection and that of your family.
