Beating a Speeding Ticket in New York
Receiving a traffic ticket in New York isn't a pleasant experience no matter where it happens. But if you're a New York driver, a ticket is not only unpleasant, it can also be expensive and threaten your ability to drive. Feraru law firm in Mineola, we have represented many individuals seeking to beat a speeding ticket in New York or parking ticket.

New York uses a point system to track driving violations for drivers with in-state licenses. Points are tallied over an 18-month period. If you receive eleven or more in an 18-month period your license is suspended. Note that this system is completely separate from the point systems used by insurance companies to determine vehicle policy rates. Regardless, speeding and other moving violations are likely to increase your premiums.
Whether you're guilty or not, there are several things to keep in mind at the time of the alleged violation:
- Be pleasant and polite to the officer.
- Roll down the window and stay in the car, unless the officer tells you to get out of the car.
- Do not admit guilt.
- Write down all you can remember about the incident.
- Don't be in a rush to pay the fine. Once you pay the ticket, you admit guilt; the points go on your record; and your insurance rates may increase.
- Be sure to address the ticket within the given timeframe. Ignoring it will not make it go away.

Further, ticket issued in New York City, parts of Suffolk Country, Buffalo, or Rochester are handled by the DMV's Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB), which generally does not permit plea bargaining. In other parts of the state, plea bargains are allowed in traffic cases.
